The buzz about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
