Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
