The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
